  1. The drivers side steering rack boot is on the left. Doesn't look too bad, just a bit greasy.

  2. Oh, until you do this. The steering rack boot is torn through. This lets in dirt which will ruin the very expensive steering rack.

  3. I want to change the boot, so I have to undo this toe in adjusting jobbie here.

  4. I marked the bolt and counted the number of exposed threads. Hopefully I will be able to put it back together with the wheels aligned and steering wheel straight.

  5. Took it off.

  6. Got the clip off of the small end.

  7. Cut the boot to get it off.

  8. Back of the boot is held on with a spring under here. Yanked that out.


  9. There's the broken boot removed.

  10. There's the dirty steering rack. Naked.

  11. New steering rack boot and the zip ties it came with. I am not filled with confidence. Once again RockAuto sent me a cheap part, not like the picture in their catalog. Rockauto happily informed me I can ship it back for $7 postage to get a $6 refund.

  12. Cleaned the steering rack.

  14. New steering rack boot installed, zip ties ready for zippin.

  15. Zipped and clipped. Reused the small clip.

  16. Ready to tighten up the toe in adjust. Looks like I cleaned off the mark I made with the white paint pen.

    As you can clearly not see in this picture, I wrote down the number of threads exposed.

Update:
Two and a half years later, and the Mevotech Power Steering Rack and Pinion Boot is cracked everywhere and split in half in six places, while the original Subaru part on the other side is still fine. But the cheap zip tie I was worried about is OK!
Mevotech is junk

The boot has a five year warranty. So if I call them maybe I can get them to send me another one of these pieces of junk. So then I will be changing this again in three years. No thanks. I'll try Moog.

Actually, the Moog boot looks ok.

So I am saying do not buy Mevotech, because their products are inferior. Mevotech is junk. OEM is better than Mevotech. Mevotech is garbage. Is Mevotech any good? No. No it is not. Has anyone tried Mevotech? I have, and they suck. Should I get the Mevotech or shove a knitting needle in my eye? Ok. I should probably let this one go.
